Building Problems / Other Issues
Power Outages
If you lose power during the school day or lose partial power please contact Central Office and Buildings and Grounds immediately. We will dispatch an electrician to your facility and contact DTE to report the outage. We will also determine if it is a building problem or an area outage. If it is a complete blackout we will provide a small generator to power the phone system. We will also provide you with temporary lanterns or lights for restrooms if needed. The emergency lighting in the hallways, the fire panel in security panels all have a two hour back up before they start to fail.
Partial power
There are three legs of power that enter the building. Sometimes a fuse will drop out and only one or two legs will come into the building, causing you to have partial power. For instance the hallway lights may work but the classroom lights will be out. We call this a brownout. Should you experience this at your facility please contact Buildings and Grounds immediately. This type of outage generates more damage to the equipment than a complete blackout.
Natural Gas
If you smell natural gas in the building pull the fire alarm and evacuate the building, then contact Buildings and Grounds. If you receive complaints of natural gas smells on the outside of the building but you do not smell it inside of the building contact buildings and grounds so that we may investigate and we will contact consumers to perform a sniff test.
Water Main Break
How to spot a water main break
If you notice water bubbling up from your parking lot or yards you may have a water main break. If you have slow flowing water from the faucet or sand in the toilets, most likely there is a break in the area. If the break occurs on school property we are responsible to repair it. If it happens on the easement or the street it is the city’s responsibility to make the repairs. Water main breaks frequently occur during cold weather months or when the frost is leaving or coming out of the ground. Should you experience any of these things please contact Buildings and Grounds immediately and we will dispatch a plumber to your facility. We will determine what the problems are and set a course of action.Disaster Response and Restoration
