Overview of School Drill Information

  • The law requires a minimum of five fire drills (three prior to December) to teach children what to do in the event a true fire occurs. Periodically discuss and practice fire emergency with your students. Students are to show leadership qualities during a drill. All doors must be closed prior to leaving the classroom. You are to have a list of students to ascertain whether all students present for that day are accounted for (list should be kept in emergency folder, which you will take outside with you during a fire drill).
  • A minimum of 2 tornado safety drills is required for each school year at the schools and facilities described in subsection (1). At least 1 of the tornado safety drills shall be conducted during March of the school year. These drills shall be conducted for the purpose of preventing injuries caused by severe weather.
  • We are required to conduct at least (3) school safety drills, and one must be during a time that students are not in their usual setting (lunch, recess, passing).
  • Please review student expectations if they are in the lunchroom, or at recess, and a lockdown is required.
  • Each teacher must have an Emergency folder kept near the classroom door with an updated class roster accessible in case of emergency. In your absence, the sub must place a copy of that day’s attendance in the emergency folder to have an accurate student count.
